Competition Rules

  1. This competition is open to everybody over the age of sixteen years.
  2. The work can be in any medium, although entries must be submitted via this website (hopeinart.com) as digital images.
  3. The title of the work must include the word HOPE in any of its many meanings – however tenuously.
  4. There will be three prizes: 1st place = £5,000, 2nd place = £2,000, 3rd place = £1,000.
  5. The winners shall be decided by a public voting process which will take place on this website. It is necessary to register with an email address in order to vote. The number of votes received by an entry will NOT be displayed on the website.
  6. The work that gets the most votes will receive a cheque for £5,000. The second highest number will receive £2,000, and the third £1,000. In the case of a tie for any of these places, a 2nd round of voting will be enforced.
  7. This website will only accept ONE vote for any entry from any one person for a particular work of art. It is possible to vote for more than one work. All votes have an equal weight.
  8. All work entered for this competition will be for sale by silent auction through this website. Artists may set a reserve price on submitted work, which is a lower limit on the amount their piece may sell for during the auction.
  9. 50% of any money paid for any piece of work will be sent to the artist and 50% will be kept by the charities. It will be divided in the ratio 1/3 for Breadline Africa to use for its work all over southern Africa, 1/3 for use specifically in Zimbabwe, and 1/3 to Friends of Africa
  10. HOPE IN ART is organising this competition and auction in order to raise charitable funds for Breadline Africa and Friends of Africa. These two charities are not involved with and take no responsibility for the organisation of the Art competition or the financial transactions between HOPE IN ART and the vendors and purchasers of the art work.
  11. To enter this competition it is necessary to complete an entry form which will include a short profile of the artist and the dimensions of the work - there is no entry fee.
  12. The work must be submitted in the form of uploaded digital photographs which will be displayed on this website along with relevant information regarding the piece. Please do NOT send in the original work.
  13. No work that is unnecessarily obscene, or includes blatant advertising or political propaganda will be accepted. The committee’s decision is final.
  14. Money paid for a piece of work will be held in escrow while the artist is told where to send the original. Once the buyer confirms receipt of the work 50% of the money will be sent to the artist. The money will be sent out on 1st March 2010.
  15. In the case of a piece of work being sold at auction, the buyer will pay for transporting the work.
  16. All work must be submitted by 31st December 2009. It will be available for view on the website within 60 hours of receipt.
